Birth control services are essential to health care and health. More than half of all pregnancies in North Carolina are unintended. This can increase the risk of poor outcomes for both mothers and babies.
By increasing access to birth control, we can improve maternal and infant health. This is a key component in our priority of improving child and family well-being.
Starting in August, people insured by NC Medicaid will have access to over-the-counter birth control. They can visit their local pharmacy, with no prescription needed and at no cost to them.
Birth Control Services Covered by NC Medicaid
Opill is the first FDA approved over-the-counter birth control pill. It is now available at local and retail pharmacies at no cost for NC Medicaid members.
This new coverage makes it easier for people to get the right care at the right time in their communities. Access is especially important for rural communities that may have fewer providers.

This step builds on prior work to expand access to birth control services statewide. These include:
- Consultation with a pharmacist to talk about birth control options.
- Access to birth control, prenatal vitamins and other health care resources.
- Connection to ongoing care if needed.
