Referring Patients to Breast and Cervical Cancer Medicaid (BCCM)

Breast and Cervical Cancer Medicaid (BCCM) helps pay for breast and cervical cancer treatment for eligible patients.

Health care providers play an important role in making referrals through the NC Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program (NC BCCCP).

Diagnosed with breast or cervical cancer? You may qualify for BCCM, which pays for treatment. Ask your local health department or NC BCCCP provider for details.

How to Refer a Patient

  • 1

    Understand Eligibility Requirements

Patients may qualify for BCCM if they:

    • Have a family income at or below 250% of the Federal Poverty Level
    • Are uninsured or underinsured
    • Are not covered by Medicare Part B or another credible insurance
    • Are referred to a local BCCCP provider
  • 2

    Review Enrollment Pathways

There are several ways you can enroll eligible patients in NC BCCCP:

    • Preferred: Refer patients to the local BCCCP provider for screening as soon as they come in, even if they don't have symptoms.
    • Refer patients with abnormal screening or diagnostic results for further work-up.
    • Provide preliminary screening tests before referral. This could include:
      • Clinical breast exam (CBE)
      • Screening and/or diagnostic mammogram
      • Pap test
      • Colposcopy

Important for physicians: Whenever possible, patients should be referred to NC BCCCP and enrolled before a diagnosis of breast or cervical cancer.

  • 3

    Gather Necessary Patient Information

Before contacting the BCCCP provider/navigator, please have all that apply:

    • Pathology/biopsy results (results summary)
    • Initial abnormal screening results
    • Treating facility/physician information
    • Cancer treatment plan
    • Duration of treatment (weeks or months)
    • Date of diagnosis
  • 4

Contact the Local BCCCP Provider or Navigator

If you have a patient who may qualify:

    1. Contact the local BCCCP provider or navigator in the county where the patient lives. If the county does not offer BCCCP services, contact the nearest county that does.
    2. Do not send the BCCM application with the patient or to the county Department of Social Services. The BCCCP navigator will handle the application process.

    The BCCCP navigator will:

    • Confirm if the patient is eligible for BCCCP
    • Start the BCCM application
    • Send the completed application packet to the county Department of Social Services
