Day in the Life of a Public Health Data Analyst and Manager

Have you ever wondered what a day in public health looks like? A lot of the work happens quietly, behind the scenes.

In the Chronic Disease and Injury section at NCDHHS’ Division of Public Health, people work hard to:

  • Collect information
  • Prevent sickness
  • Teach others how to stay healthy

We spent a day with Zaniyah Upchurch to see what her job is like.

Zaniyah is a public health data analyst and manager in the Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program (NC BCCCP)

Her work helps turn numbers into useful information.

Each day, she looks at trends in screening data, checks results for people in the program and makes sure the program is reaching its goals.

The work Zaniyah does connects to big projects, like the NC Cancer Action Plan. This plan helps guide the state’s efforts to lower the impact of cancer in our communities. She knows that every data point she studies represents a woman getting care and living a healthier life.

Free or Affordable Screenings
