Expanding VFC and 317 VFA Coverage Criteria

The North Carolina Immunization Program (NCIP) would like to inform you of two new updates to the coverage criteria: 1.) The 317 Vaccines for Adults (VFA) coverage criteria has been expanded to include the HPV (GARDASIL®9) vaccine for uninsured and underinsured adults, effective immediately at VFA-enrolled locations. 2.) Vaccines for Children (VFC) coverage criteria for MMRV (ProQuad®) has been expanded to include ≥ 12 months to 12 years (no longer limited to ≥ 4 years through 12 years).

Dear VFC and 317 VFA providers,

The North Carolina Immunization Program (NCIP) would like to inform you of two new updates to the coverage criteria(PDF):

  1. The 317 Vaccines for Adults (VFA) coverage criteria has been expanded to include the HPV (GARDASIL®9) vaccine for uninsured and underinsured adults, effective immediately at VFA-enrolled locations.
     
  2. Vaccines for Children (VFC) coverage criteria for MMRV (ProQuad®) has been expanded to include ≥ 12 months to 12 years (no longer limited to ≥ 4 years through 12 years).

Providers should refer to updated coverage criteria(PDF) when determining patient eligibility.

Note: VFC providers should continue to place orders through NCIR for VFC-eligible children


317 VFA Ordering and Storage Instructions
 

When placing an order for 317 VFA in NCIR, please include a note in the comments section specifying which vaccines are 317 VFA and the number of doses requested for each.

317 VFA vaccines may be stored in the same cold storage unit, provided they are labeled and physically separated from VFC, private, and 317 pediatric vaccines. 

 

Uninsured and Underinsured Adult Eligibility Criteria


Under the 317 VFA Program, eligible adults include:

  • Uninsured adults 
  • Underinsured adults
    • Adults who have health insurance, but insurance does not cover any vaccines
    • Adults who have health insurance, but insurance covers only selected vaccines
    • Adults who have health insurance, but insurance does not provide first-dollar coverage for vaccines
