Heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in the United States. Nearly one in three women die from heart disease each year.

The North Carolina Well-Integrated Screening and Evaluation for Women Across the Nation (WISEWOMAN) Program helps women lower their risk for heart disease and other chronic health problems through free or affordable screenings and support.

If you qualify, you can get services close to home:

  • Your local health department
  • Some community health centers and health care providers

What Services You Can Get

Through NC WISEWOMAN, you may receive:

  • Heart disease risk factor testing
  • Monitoring of:
    • Blood pressure
    • Cholesterol
    • Blood sugar
    • Height and weight (BMI)
  • Healthy behavior support services like counseling, classes and activities
  • Referrals to health care providers and sources of affordable medications

These services help you set goals to improve your health — such as eating more fruits and vegetables or walking 30 minutes each day — and get support to reach them.

Diagnosed with breast or cervical cancer? You may also qualify for Breast and Cervical Cancer Medicaid (BCCM), which pays for treatment. Ask your local health department or NC BCCCP health care provider for details.

Who Can Get Services

You may be eligible if you:

  • Qualify for the NC BCCCP program
  • Do not have insurance or your insurance does not cover screening
  • Do not have Medicare Part B or Medicaid
  • Are between ages 35-64
  • Have a household income at or below 250% of the federal poverty level

Women who qualify for NC WISEWOMAN may also be eligible for the NC Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program (NC BCCCP). BCCCP offers free or low-cost screenings for breast and cervical cancer.
