The Vaccines for Children (VFC) program helps eligible families get free vaccines. These vaccines can cost hudreds of dollars each when paying out-of-pocket.

Who can get free vaccines?

Your child (birth through 18 years old) can get free vaccines if:

  • they have NC Medicaid or are eligible to get NC Medicaid; or
  • they do not have private health insurance; or
  • they are underinsured (their health insurance doesn't cover all of the recommended vaccines); or
  • they are American Indian or Alaskan Native.

If your child qualifies, you can get them vaccinated by a doctor or clinic enrolled in the VFC program.

Vaccine coverage: All recommended vaccines are paid for

The VFC program covers every vaccine recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to protect children and teens. This includes all vaccines required for school and child care in North Carolina.

The VFC program is funded through the CDC and run by the North Carolina Immunization Program (NCIP).

Find a VFC provider near you

Call first to ask if they are accepting new VFC patients. Some locations may have full schedules.

*VFC Providers: Update your information

Community Clinic: Generally open to the public, but call first. They include federally qualified health centers, public health department clinics, school-based clinics, rural health clinics and Indian health service locations.

Doctor’s Office: Includes family practices, pediatricians, primary care centers and mobile providers.

Birthing Hospital/Center: Babies delivered at these locations can get certain vaccines at birth through the VFC program, if they qualify.

Understanding fees at your child's appointment

The VFC program pays for vaccine doses, but the provider may charge:

  • A fee to administer the vaccines. Important: your child cannot be denied the vaccines, even if you can't afford this fee.
  • A fee for the office visit. You can ask for a "vaccine-only" visit. Providers in the VFC program must offer this type of appointment.

Some locations offer discounts or "sliding-scale" fees for people who don't have insurance, or whose insurance may not cover everything. Call to ask what fees might apply to your visit.
