A Critical Public Service for North Carolinians

A Welcome Message from Director Dr. Scott Shone

The State Laboratory of Public Health helps protect North Carolinians' health by testing for:

  • Elevated lead levels in blood, to end childhood lead poisoning.
  • Sexually transmitted diseases, including syphilis, chlamydia and gonorrhea.
  • Bacteria in drinking water and milk.
  • Conditions and diseases in newborns.
  • Rabies in animals.
  • Infectious diseases, including COVID-19, Ebola and Plague.

Our skilled experts test hundreds of thousands of samples and provides lab results statewide. Each sample tells a story about the health of our state. This critical public service gets North Carolinians answers and helps providers determine treatment.

Leading the Way

The State Lab guides laboratories and trains providers statewide. With 120 years of experience, we serve as a reference library for difficult, unusual and otherwise unavailable lab tests. We take part in special studies and research projects. We develop, evaluate and standardize testing procedures.

Behind the Scenes at the State Lab

There's more to public health science than testing samples. At the State Lab, a lot of important work happens behind the scenes to keep everything running smoothly.

Our operations and logistics support teams make sure the lab stays organized, stocked and ready to respond to health threats.
