About the On-Site Water Protection Branch
The On-Site Water Protection Branch of the Environmental Health Section:
- Provides regulatory oversight of sub-surface on-site wastewater treatment and dispersal systems.
- Inspects and tests private drinking water wells constructed, repaired or abandoned on or after July 1, 2008.
We provide statewide regulatory and technical guidance to:
- Local health departments
- Builders, developers and landowners
- Wastewater system installers and operators
- Well contractors
- Soil scientists, professional engineers and geologists
- Environmental health consultants and others
We do not deal with surface applications of treated wastewater, treated wastewater discharged directly into surface waters or public water supplies as defined in 15A NCAC 18C (PDF).
