About the On-Site Water Protection Branch
The On-Site Water Protection Branch:
- Provides regulatory oversight of sub-surface on-site wastewater treatment and dispersal systems
- Inspects and tests private drinking water wells constructed, repaired or abandoned on or after July 1, 2008.
We develop and implement new, revised or amended statewide regulations. We provide statewide and regulatory and consultative services to:
- Local health departments
- Builders
- Developers
- Landowners
- System installers and operators
- Engineers
- Soil scientists
- Geologists
- Environmental health consultants
We do not deal with:
- Surface applications of treated wastewater
- Treated wastewater discharged directly into surface waters
- Public water supplies as defined in 15A NCAC 18C (i.e. those serving restaurants, churches, and medical facilities)
