NC's changing weather is affecting our health
NC is getting hotter
More hot days, hotter nights and longer heatwaves can cause serious health problems. How to protect yourself from heat-related illness.
Expected increase in wildfires
Smoke from wildfires near and far can make the air dangerous to breathe, especially for people with asthma or other lung conditions. Check your local air quality and get health tips.
Increased flooding due to more rain, rising sea levels
Flooding can lead to deaths, injuries and other health threats. Ways to prepare for flooding and how to stay safe during disaster clean-up work.
About the NCDHHS Climate and Health Program
The Climate and Health Program protects people across our state, sharing life-saving information. We also work with partners and prepare communities for climate change impacts.
What We Do
We work with local health departments, community groups and others to:
- Send heat health alerts to keep people safe during extreme heat
- Track health problems caused by heat, poor air quality, flooding and other climate issues
- Educate communities on staying safe from wildfire smoke and other hazards
- Support local planning that includes climate and environmental justice
- Help communities in Western NC that face the highest climate risks
The program has been funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Climate and Health Program since 2010.
